Growing up

I grew up in the close-knit community of Salem, Virginia, with my parents, my three brothers, and down the street from my cousins and their family. I traveled often with my father, who owns and runs a company with his two brothers. On these trips, I not only saw the world, but also learned about technology, entrepreneurship, and the business world as I assisted my dad in presentations to clients and prospects. From him and my mother, I also cultivated an optimistic spirit and the love learning, art, nature, athletics, and the adventure of travel.

With only one high school and a string of state championships, Salem is a town that thrives on sports. I played football, hockey, wrestling, basketball and baseball in my younger years, but I eventually gravitated towards lacrosse since it combined both athletic quickness and mental toughness.

In the summer of my sophomore year, I was spotted by a lacrosse coach during a summer event and received an invitation to become a boarding student at St. Anne’s Belfield in Charlottesville, Virginia. The school has a long legacy of successful lacrosse teams. While leaving the close knit camaraderie of my siblings, moving to a new environment helped me grow, and I came to understand how change is fundamental to learning. My new situation and responsibilities brought opportunities to achieve higher scholastic and athletic goals, as well as opened wonderful invitations for serendipitous events to unfold in my life.

One new goal was to play at a top lacrosse school with strong academics. At the University of Maryland, I found a top 10 D1 program that challenged my athletics talents and allowed me to explore a variety of academic interests. This year, I have set goals of winning the NCAA championships to top our Final Four appearance last year. In addition to achieving strong grades, I plan to stay active in entrepreneurial incubation labs and start-up competitions so I can improve my technology and business skills. Above all, I would like to intern with a leading company that values creative thinking and desires to leverage new technology as a competitive advantage. My college experience in financial statistics and information technology along with enthusiastic mindset will allow me to become contributing team member.
